Won't stay running

about 3 weeks ago this problem started, first thing in the morning it will fire right up and then just die like turnning the key off. Then if I turn the key off and then back on and leave it on for about about 60 sec it will fire up and stay running but a little rough then smooth out. HELP

What's the outside temp when doing this? Age of glowplugs/gp relay?

On the second attempt to start, does it fire right up or do you have to let it crank for a while? Does your oil pressure gauge show any pressure once the engine fires or does it take a while before the needle moves?

Makes no difference what the outside temp is, glow plugs are about a year old and I have a led light hooked up to the controller and I know it,s working

On the 2nd attempt is almost always fires right up, a few times it took a little to get it started, as for the oil gauge I never really noticed.

Almost sounds like low oil in hpop. Maybe try checking that before the first start.

Read this thread. I had the same issue. It's your LPOP. Order a new one. Riffraff Diesel: Melling LPOP. Easy to replace. Get er done before it gets colder out.

One thing, if I turn the key on and wait untill my glow plug LED light goes off it will start and stay running but a little rough.

I am thinking the same thing...

Can the OP confirm by checking the HPOP reservoir immediately after it dies but before attempting to start the second time?

A weak LPOP should result in long crank times after initial stall, a stand pipe failure will almost always start quickly, I would check the HPOP reservoir when completely cold then immediately after stall I'll bet it's drained back some while sitting but fills right up during the run and crank cycle!

Gotta disagree with you and the dog. I dealt with this for a long time before I fixed it. More often than not restarts were pretty quick. Unless t was really cold, the oil was really old, or by the time I fixed it, the LPOP was really warm.

It's the LPOP, I promise.

It's a really good possibility! I have just been burnt by that standpipe a couple of times & and it's a really easy look in when cold for drain back, not really how Monty can do it ^so well! (lacking opposing thumbs and such) but ^^^^^he assures me it's worth a look but at $80.00 for a pump it's almost worth it IMHO to replace them at 150k anyway just as a preventative maint item!

I wished my oil pressure gauge would show something when cranking, I guess I need to put in a manual pressure gauge.

Thanks all, I know that here I can always get directions to look.

Stupid autocorrect on my phone. Should read "the LPOP was really worn."
