Comp Cams

Yeay, I know... that seems to be a dirty word on this forum, but I'm gonna ask anyways, just in case... Has anyone ever tried the 292h grind from Comp? (Hydraulic - Magnum series) It's a .560 lift/244 duration @ .050", advertised duration - 292, 110° lobe separation. I know that some have reported problems with the distributor gear and the stock Ford dizzy... I've got the MSD FE dizzy. Maybe that would eliminate that problem? Pros/cons on this cam choice, anyone??? Only reason I'm asking is that my engine guy prefers Comp stuff and it's kind of hard for me to tell him different as he is far, far more learned than I!
Thanks.

71FOMOCO, the problem with Comp's gears is that they aren't cut with the correct pitch on the teeth. They can damage anybodys dizzy gear, it is a manufacturing problem at Comp. I wouldn't take a Comp part if you gave it to me. Your engine guy only likes them because stuff from Comp is cheap ! Crane has some nice offerings, why not look at some of theirs ? What are you planning on doing anyway ? that 246 @ 050 is kinda big for most truckish things....but if you really need a cam that big, Crane has them. DF

Thanks for that feedback, DF. To answer your question as far as what I'm planning on doing with the truck, I just want as much streetable power out of it as I can get. I figured this ought to get me close to 400hp or so. It's nothing special really, just a street truck that will be driven quite a bit. I just want to know that the power's there if I need it at the red light! Want it to talk loud and run fast. Something to make those chebby lovers take notice!

71 Fomoco, your goals are WAY too conservative. 400 horse power is EASY with a 390 with a smaller cam than you are looking at. Check out some of the graphs RS put up. They list the cams and compression some guys are using and what results they are getting. DF, at hid dad's house.
