ZF Case swap?
I just picked myself up a 96 F350 crew on the weekend for cheap($600,) truck is in decent shape, but it has had a very spectacular DMF failure, and pieces of it or the clutch(haven't yanked it apart yet) have pretty much destroyed the bellhousing of the ZF. It was an almost new transmission too.
I have a S5-42 kicking around with no reverse, and the case is in excellent shape. Has anyone tried putting the guts out of a -47 in a -42 case?

Complete 96 F350 crew 4x4 for $600, $600 more expensive than the 96 F250 in my sig that I used to drag it home... LOL
I know the gas and diesel cases are different, what I have is a -42 diesel trans with a good case and no reverse sitting under the bench. A bit of digging online makes it look like it may be doable with some mix and match of parts.

The tailhousing from a -42 on a -47 isn't going to work nicely, the main shift shaft is the same legnth between the two, but has the socket for the shifter located differently, and the pockets it slides in in the cases are located differently, the one in the front of the -42 is the longer one, while it's the rear one on the -47. A -42 front half with a -47 rear housing works fine though.

For me, since I'm using a -42 front half on a -47 tailhousing and gearset, it's going to work just fine. On the opposite combo, you might be able to shorten the shift shaft, but I'm not sure if it would be long enough to engage the bearings on both ends properly.
The input shaft has a gear attached, and it is specific to the transmission, there are 3 different tooth counts for the -42, and just one for the -47, but, they won't interchange.

Figured I should give this a bump for information's sake. I finally got around to working on this truck again... Almost 4 years later... The case I used is from an 89, the guts and tail housing are 97...
Either I did something very wrong, or I have just never driven a ZF that was shimmed properly, this is by far the quietest one I have ever been around, and it is behind a SMF.
This is the $600 truck in question, now wearing 315's and wheels that I traded for a truck I got for free and already took $1400 in studded winter tires off of... LOL
