ZF Case swap?

I just picked myself up a 96 F350 crew on the weekend for cheap($600,) truck is in decent shape, but it has had a very spectacular DMF failure, and pieces of it or the clutch(haven't yanked it apart yet) have pretty much destroyed the bellhousing of the ZF. It was an almost new transmission too.
I have a S5-42 kicking around with no reverse, and the case is in excellent shape. Has anyone tried putting the guts out of a -47 in a -42 case?

you picked up a psd for 600 dollars?
or you picked up something else?

the ZF cases are different for 460's and gassers.

Complete 96 F350 crew 4x4 for $600, $600 more expensive than the 96 F250 in my sig that I used to drag it home... LOL
I know the gas and diesel cases are different, what I have is a -42 diesel trans with a good case and no reverse sitting under the bench. A bit of digging online makes it look like it may be doable with some mix and match of parts.

I believe most of the internals are the same from the 42 to the 47, but there are some different bushing sizes.

But I'm no trans expert, nor do I ever want to be.
The input shaft on the 47 is a bit longer though and will mount up to the flywheel better in the pilot bushing.

I pushed the truck into the shop last night, I guess I'll find out Saturday just how swappable parts are.

Be sure to let us know. I'll be doing a sorta similar job later this winter. Swapping the tail housing from a 4wd 42 onto a 47 and rebuilding the 47 while it's apart.

The tailhousing from a -42 on a -47 isn't going to work nicely, the main shift shaft is the same legnth between the two, but has the socket for the shifter located differently, and the pockets it slides in in the cases are located differently, the one in the front of the -42 is the longer one, while it's the rear one on the -47. A -42 front half with a -47 rear housing works fine though.

Would it be possible to swap out the input shafts? Other than that, it's roughly the same is it not? I need to do a rebuild anyway.

For me, since I'm using a -42 front half on a -47 tailhousing and gearset, it's going to work just fine. On the opposite combo, you might be able to shorten the shift shaft, but I'm not sure if it would be long enough to engage the bearings on both ends properly.

The input shaft has a gear attached, and it is specific to the transmission, there are 3 different tooth counts for the -42, and just one for the -47, but, they won't interchange.

Figured I should give this a bump for information's sake. I finally got around to working on this truck again... Almost 4 years later... The case I used is from an 89, the guts and tail housing are 97...
Either I did something very wrong, or I have just never driven a ZF that was shimmed properly, this is by far the quietest one I have ever been around, and it is behind a SMF.

This is the $600 truck in question, now wearing 315's and wheels that I traded for a truck I got for free and already took $1400 in studded winter tires off of... LOL

Nice to see this figured out. My zf needs to be opened. I'm hoping all the internals are useable and all I have to do is bearings and synchros. I'm usually not that lucky though
