thanks for the website "Mr. Headlights" that is a starting point. But I narrowed it down, I looked today, the brake pedal thingy that gives power to the brake lights wasn't touching the brake pedal, so I cleaned it up and now it works. So now I have brake lights and tail lights. I'm not too sure about back up lights yet. is the fuse for the brake lights the same for back up lights? I will check it tomorrow. Where is the Back up light/ reverse switch located at? I have read it will be either on the transmission or on the steering column under the hood, though I have heard it is on the transmission. I have a replacement turn signal switch, is there any easy way to hook one up? the wires on mine have been cut long, but no connecter. So I guess I will splice and dice.
If an automatic transmission, the backup light switch is part of the Neutral Safety Switch.
If a manual transmission, I'm only familiar with those that have a separate switch in the transmission itself with two wires going to it.
In both cases, I *think* the wires are black/purple-stripe but could be something else (black/blue-stripe maybe?) as I haven't seen my 1970s books for a long time now.
Replacing the turn signal switch isn't hard but you need to remove the steering wheel and the screws holding the switch in place (and the turn signal lever), then remove the red retainer on the half-moon-shaped connector on the switch's harness down near the dash, then one by one remove the wires by moving the small retaining tabs holding each wire in place.
It sounds worse than it is.
But, if you don't have a connector................
well I haven't had a neutral safety switch since I got the truck, meaning it wasn't there when I got the truck. I had back up lights till about six months ago. I will check again to make sure. I've been busy for the past month due to football injuries.
I found a spare neutral safety switch and put it on, but found out that the tab (usually snapped on the shift tube) wasn't there, so I got one of those too. I couldn't get it to snap into place and stay. So all I need is a solution for the neutral safety switch issue and enough time to put the turn signal switch in.
any ideas on how I can make the switch work without the tab? I could make a toggle switch work, if I can make all the wires connect write. By looking at the wiring diagrams posted, I believe if I could get the red/blue wire(to ignition switch) to touch and the black/red wire hooked to a toggle switch I could get back up lights. There is four wires on the plug hooked up to the NSS. White with black stripe, red/black, red/blue, and one more that I don't remember what color.
also, if I put a toggle switch on the wire going to the ignition switch, I could turn it off if I go to get out of my truck in town, so it won't start, and people would have a harder time stealing it.

I don't mean to be a wiener, or a stickler, but it just helps clean the thread up a lot more. Just so ya know friend!
