so i finally had someone drive the truck who knew fords pretty well. he gets out and first thing he says is you have a major tcase problem. he then explained that its most likely the friction plates(clutch) or shift fork but definitely the tcase. anyway, they quote 900 parts and labor to rebuild it. so i found one on craigslist for 100 off a 98 EB with 110k miles. hes getting the numbers off the blue tag now and i should know soon. is a 98 5.4 and 99 5.4(mine) compatible if the numbers match? i have a 4406-23 btw. if he has a 4406-20 that wouldnt work correct.
sometimes i hate being right, wish this was a simple fix......
and is there anything i should know or look for b4 i buy it?
About the best you can do is verify that the control switches on the dash are identical. If not, don't buy it. A4WD-4WD HI-4WD LO is not the same as T/case with 2WD. I hope the one he has is the correct one for you. Make sure you fill it with ATF during the install.
just called ford and they confirmed: they are indeed NOT compatible. 4Lo works, i may just wire in a switch to 104 and call it a day. and stop whining lol

That might not really be a safe solution. Someone here might be able to advise on how to adapt or wire your truck to be able to use that T/case. I'm pretty sure it would involve getting his control switch and harness as well as his ECU because it is all intergrated. The 2WD is a nice feature, but is it worth all the work?
oh, no, thats not what i meant. i meant my tcase currently ONLY works in 4LO. ya, ur right that would be a massive piece of work to convert to the 2HI,awd,4hi,4lo setup on the 97/98s.
since the problems only occur when fuse 104 is in, i would simply wire in an inline 30A fuse/switch and use it exclusively on 4LO.
that said, my problems have been solved! found another guy locally that does have a 99 EB 5.4 tcase with 89k on it. tested and working for 275$!!
my back has been screwed up lately so i asked how much to install. he says 500 for the tcase and labor.
cant beat that. i will update hopefully tomorrow night when the job is done. im just hoping the last guy was right about the tcase being the problem. i believe it is tho cuz after a very short drive in 4HI(which has the most binding) i felt both differentials, they were warm, then felt the tcase and it burned me. the mechanic felt it and was 100% sure the problem was exclusive to the tcase. cant wait to have a FULLY functional 4wd/4x4 truck.
