I have a 1999 Navigator 4x4 with 143k.
It's been an extra vehicle for some time. (only put maybe 1k on it since June)
Anyways, now when I go to start it, the thing just cranks and cranks. Then it will start for half a second and stal. Sometimes it takes 5+ minutes just to get it to start.
Once it starts it seem to run fine. Until I turn it off then it takes forever to start. Sometimes i get lucky at it starts right up though!
Bad GEM if not what could it be?
On a side note, today the truck had a new issue. When turning left it feels like i have no power steering, but turning right is fine. Even when cruising at speed (55 mph) taking a left is harder than on my old manual steering s-10! Gearbox shot?
The hard starting sounds like a bad fuel pump. You might want to connect a fuel pressure gauge to see what PSI you're getting as you try to start it.
Yes the steering issue could be the gear box. I would start by disconnecting the pitman arm and seeing if there is a difference when turning left or right. If there is it's the box, if there isn't you likely have binding linkage.
Thanks alloro
When i jacked up the front end there was no viable binding of the linkage. The steering is fine with no weight on the front end. Once i lowered the tires back to the ground same old steering problem.
gearbox?
It could be a gear box problem but, with the electrical issues you have I suggest that you clear them up first and then go after the steering. The steering feel is usually a result of the feed back to the PCM from various sensors in the system.
