My #3 cyl is only 90 psi (120 wet) and all others 115-120 on my 71 360 2bl. Having trouble getting #3 to fire all the time. #3 plug insulator is still white and plug looks unused after a couple hundred miles (all others have turned a light brown). After putting another plug in #3 and increasing gap to .038 it seems to be firing now (idles and runs smoother) but for how long... I'm using Autolite #45's. Will the Pertronix with flame thrower coil help keep #3 alive to postpone a rebuild for a while? Would I want to use a Pertronix I or II for my stock 360? How about a hotter plug, anyone have any brand/part number suggestions?
I would wonder why #3's plug is white, I would say might be because your compression rings might be bad on that cylinder, because when you put oil in the hole your compression comes up. If it is the compression ring, there is not much you can do to pospone it from getting weaker.
If your #3 is out, then it is out... but if your thinking about going to the Petronix system, don't wait. I swapped the points out for the little "black box" and in 15 minutes loved it. No more bad condinsers, or engine loosing power until I readjust the points. If you get the Petronix, go with the Petronix II and fork over the extra $40 for the coil. It does help what you do have runnin, but what ain't there it can't help. My 390 is dead on #7, and the locals still hate it when i get lead foot cause it tears the tires apart after a couple small mods to the motor, and the Petronix was the first.
don't worry bout the dead cylinder fe's will go for thousands and thousands of miles with dead cylinders. Unless your picky time for worrying about a rebuild is at least 10 000miles away in my opinion.
I asked the guy at the autoparts store about Pertyronix I <vs> II. He said to save my money and go with the I. He says that the II is more for higher RPM applications. What do you all think?
my Petronix I worked fine crusing around in my 390, but when i really went to hitting a load it did start to hesitate a little on the torque. One of my griends has close to the same set up except with the II and he has almost never noticed a bog and claims better milage than i get (12 mpg) so, which ever u do, only buy it once...
