Well my 1978 351M finally blew up 650,000 miles later,
and I have had the idea of putting a 7.3L Powerstroke in it.
My front suspension has Shock/Coil/Shock set up, and I was wondering if you guys could point me in the direction to upgrading it to handle a much heavier engine & Transmission.
A 460 is already 7.5 liters so ya might not need to upgrade the suspension. Compare the weight of a 7.3 Powerstroke system to a 460 with AC, PS, HD cooling, etc.
It might be just a matter of swapping coils for ones spec'ed for an F250/F350 with a 460.
I would seriously look into upgrading your axles to atleast 3/4 ton units just do to the pure torque the PSD puts out in comparison to the gas motors. The 9" probably can take it for awhile but that's just something to think about.
The other parts of the front is the coil springs. The 7.3 weighs right around 1000 IIRC and the 460 is closer to 650 so half again as much weight. You can get custom coils without being too high. (using coils out of a big block truck will leave the front end a couple inches too low with the PSD)
Also remember a diesel doesn't produce vacuum so you will need to change the brakes power system probably to a hydroboost system like out of the super duties.
