Using AE is actually not hard. I think you will find out that it is more difficult understanding your trucks systems and what to look for in AE to diagnose the systems. Having a thourough understanding of how the truck and components work makes it a whole lot easier.
I always recommend having the Power Train Diagnostic manual for your specific year. It is a priceless piece of information that will help make you understand the systems. You can pick them up on eBay if you look around.
You can print out and save the codes. I believe if you are on the code screen, you can select to save it as a file. Then when you connect to a printer, you can print it, or pull it up at a later time.

you can save it as a file? is it a txt file or what? i dont think you can, i was looking for ways to save it and didnt find anything.
I have done it for others. I may have to get out the other computer to figure it out again. Not something I do a bunch as I am usually not chasing codes. Most often it is one code or just a playing session I am doing.
1) On the DTC tab, click the printer icon button (top right side on mine) or press F8
2)When the pop-up box appears, save the job to your AE folder or somewhere you can find it. It will save as an XML file.
3)Now you should be able to view the report and print it if you wish.
