Per Ford website -

The chrome package for super duty lariat includes bright metallic exhaust tip, chrome tow hooks, chrome mirror caps, chrome tie downs in bed, 18" chrome wheels and 6" chrome steps.

Package for 2012 - $1395

I really didn't want it, but I this truck was the closest to everything I wanted w/o having a ton of stuff I didn't want.

I was going to order exactly what I wanted but at the time 5-6 things I had to have were on hold due to the stuff happening in Japan or whatever. I'd just now be getting my truck, if I was lucky.

I stopped by the dealership tonight to take a look at some mirrors to figure out for sure what my options were.

Here's what I think I figured out.

On the XL work trucks the mirrors do seem to have a one piece back. But I was looking at a lariat that did not have the chrome package and it seemed to have the exact same mirror as I have now, only the top cap was textured back plastic (matching the rest of the mirror) I looked inside the mirror (behind the glass mirror itself) and it has the same clips holding the top cap on as my mirrors with the chrome caps do.

So it seems I can have a textured black plastic cap to replace my chrome cap. Just can't buy it from Ford parts, I guess. Which seems really odd. What if you broke your black plastic cap? You have to buy the entire mirror?

So.....anyone have textured black plastic mirror caps that they would be willing to sell for a reasonable price? I've had a couple guys offer to trade, and I appreciate that, but I want to keep my chrome caps for resale/trade in.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

As some have stated.. no such luck on the textured top black piece, they do not exist. There are 2 mirror options, Solid black one piece --or-- cut out back for chrome/paint to match skull cap. The solid black does look like it is 2 pieces, but it is not.

I went through this same thing when I got my truck because I wanted painted caps and I did not order the chrome package (2 piece mirror), so I had to buy new mirrors.....yes expensive. Your pretty much screwed if you break/crack the outside housing, ford does not sell individual housings so your forced to buy a complete mirror assembly.

Just buy some paint to match caps. Even if you just paint them black they are still going to be the best option. If nothing else you can probably sell the chrome ones on eBay and recoup some of your money. I like the look of the mirrors painted the same color as the truck.

Ford may not sell the textured top cap separately for some unknown reason, but the mirrors I looked at yesterday had a removable black textured top cap, 100% sure of it. I all but took it completely apart to confirm. You can plainly see the clips to take it apart behind it glass mirror itself and the top cap moves slightly separate of the rest of the mirror body.

Matt, I would just paint it but I want it to match the rest of the mirror. Only other option is to paint the entire mirror. That would work for 6 months or so, then the rock chips and bug splatter would make it look like crap.

If I can't have the black textured top cap, I'll just keep the chrome ones and live with it.

Appreciate the offer, but I want to keep my chrome ones for trade in/resale. I would be interested in buying your black caps outright though.

Better question is how much do you want for them?

I'll pay a fair price, just really not sure what that price should be....

New chrome caps are $73 at my dealer. They don't sell the black textured ones, but figure the black ones (being the basic caps) should be quite a bit cheaper than the chrome ones (being the fancy ones).

Let me know what you're thinking. Also before we get too far, it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to pop your top caps off. Just to make sure it's the same thing and will work on my mirrors. Maybe send me a pic of the cap after it's removed?

Are you still willing to trade your black caps for chrome ones? I have been looking for black ones for my black tuck.

I have all black from a 2012 XL if you are interested in trading the entire mirror. OR if I can remove a cap if it has one, i would trade, you buy me new chrome caps. I'll check tommorrow to see if they have removable caps. Take delivery on the truck tommorrow.
