I used to think that horsepower was what I wanted to build for, but recently I'mnot so sure. I don't care about top speed, I want monstrous acceleration. Should I build for high horses or high torque? It will be a street vehicle.
Both torque and HP are related and are enhanced by much of the same components. More air and fuel with bigger spark= more. Some where around 450 Hp you will find nearly the same in torque. After that, with out power adders, you will see drops in toque compared to the HP. the torque will go up, but not as siginifacntly as the HP. this is an in general situation. I am sure there are ways to make more torque than hp and make gobs of it, but I am only aware of Nitrous or forced induction in order to make it. Hope this helps.
Buy a tachometer. I will bet that you will be surprised how little time your motor spends above 2500 rpm. When you look at the mag reviews the test usually start at 2000 or 3000 rpm -- the rpm where you will be done most of the time. Horsepower is Torque multiplied by RPM (how fast can you do the work). So the easiest way to make more HP is to spin the motor faster. For a daily driver build for the MOST low RPM Torque you can. You will be much happier.
Horsepower is a fancy way of measuring torque. A 289 in a truck like mine could kick my butt off the line if it were geared right. When you throw in a bigger cam than the heads can handle you will loose both torque and horsepower. Why build an engine that needs to turn a billion rpms to get the same power as it could at a lower RPM? Same HP @ a higher RPM equals less torque which in turn equals the need for lower gears to get the same performance.
