undercoat until spring

Okay, so I bought all the POR stuff and the repaint stuff and the cleaning stuff to completely clean, POR coat and repaint my undercarriage because of the amount of rust I have. Problem is, now the weather is too cold according to the mfg label for me to do the work an I do not have access to a heated garage/barn that is tall enough for me to get my truck in.

The question is....is there anything that I can spray on my undercarriage to help hold the rust at bay until early spring that will not cause me problems with painting at that time? If so, where can I get it and how hard is it to apply. Thanks in advance!!!

Get a kerosene-fueled (or propane) torpedo heater and direct it beneath the vehicle while you work and the paint dries?

May sounds corny but you can take used motor oil place in a spray bottle and squirt away. Just keep re-applying every few weeks until the weather gets warmer for your exterior work. Use to live in salt heavy michigan and it seemed to work very well, just remember to clean the undercarriage.

If your going to do something like this go with fluid film. Its pretty cheap and a hell of a lot better for the environment.

I've heard good things about Fluid Film. I am going to pick some up myself today.

Any kind of oil-based rust prevention is going to make it that much harder to achieve good adhesion when you treat your undercarriage in spring.

Be carefull doing this tho... too much heat can ruin the paint...or even melt plastic.... (Ask me how I know.)

DOH!!!
Totally forgot about fluid film, would definitely go with this rather than used motor oil.

Remember, any oil-based protection will make using a rust encapsulator this spring more difficult since you'll have to thoroughly degrease everything.

Fluid Film is lanolin. It was designed to be removable. The washing with soap and warm water will remove it to allow the POR-15 application process.

On the back-side of the POR-15 application it is the ideal treatment for all the things that can't be painted.

I have sold lots of Fluid Film to folks, many here, for just this purpose, and have applied it before and after POR-15 application..

From their website, looks like it has petroleum oils in it:

"FLUID FILM is formulated from specially processed wool-wax, highly refined petroleum oils and selected agents to provide corrosion control, penetration, metal wetting and water displacement."

Fluid film will wash away from most parts of your truck by spring. There may be a few areas that you need to hand wash but anything exposed to the elements will wash away with time. I know that I usually need to coat my truck twice a winter. It generally removes pretty easily but using a degreaser may help a bit. I think its your best short term option

All true. However, and I speak from experience on my fleet and on that of several of my subs where we have painted the entire undercarriages, .when you do the recommended washing and etching prep, Fluid Film will not be an issue. POR-15 is an epoxy and it sticks quite well to about anything other than UHMW plastic. If one wishes to be a purist, or do a show vehicle, perhaps, but I don't think that was the point of the question.
