Just curious what everyone is doing with their empty DEF jugs.
I use one of them to change oil on my generator on my 5er. The flex spout fits right over the drain tube on the bottom of the generator. Perfect. And at only 2 quarts capacity, I can get several changes out of one jug before taking it to the recycler.
I also use one to catch the fuel when I drain the water separator. The first time I used the jug, there was a small amount of crystalized DEF in the bottom. I disposed of that sample, but now when I collect samples, I pour the clean, water free diesel into one of three 5 gallon diesel cans which I use for heater fuel to heat my shop. I use #1 diesel in my salamander heater. But a quart, +/-, of #2 isn't going to hurt anything. I never pour the sample back into the truck.
BTW, I have yet to get any water out of the separator. 15,000 miles and no water. Seems like I should have gotten some by now. I have been in 9 different states in the last 14 months. One time, in Iowa, I had to buy Bio. Makes me wonder if the water separator really works. I do use Power Service products. All except the red bottle which has alcohol in it to get you going when you're all gelled up.
Speaking of gelling up, winter's coming. Guess I better go put on my new fuel filters. I always like to put on fresh filters before winter.
Good timing on this thread as I just did my first DEF fill-up today with the Ford DEF jugs. It took right at 3 gallons so I've got one empty and another that has just a little gone out of it.
