high idle mod

Since cold weathers approaching im thinking of wiring switchable power to the high idle solenoid so I have control of the idle. Ill wire in a diode on the temp sender so it still functions but wont backfeed when the switch is on. Will this work?

should but id recomend a new temp sender and stock setup too i got mine off and last year only had to rev her for a min or less to warm up to run. if it were me id use a hot water heater control to make it turn on and off.

You need a diode to the timing advance solenoid as they are powered off the same line. Then you just wire 12volt power for the high idle solenoid and put it on a switch.

If you go on oilburners.net all the details are there in one of there tech articles.

Why not disconnect the stock wire and wire 12v direct to the solenoid from a fused switch for full manual control?

I've done this mod, i have the option of automatic/manual.

You have to be very careful to NOT override the timing advance, as its advanced enough to fry your GPs if you leave it on too long.

I used a solenoid to switch the idle advance between manual on and on with the temp sensor only, alternatively you have to diode the wire to the idle solenoid so that the 12v doesn't backfeed into the timing advance.

Gonna bump this up. Will this work on a 6.9. I have high idle and 3 cylinder idle on my cummins and love it. And so if this will work on the 6.9's it's happening.

Of course it will work on a 6.9, they are almost the same engine, and take the same IP

Where can I get a high idle solenoid and bracket without spending $xxx? Mine was siezed, so I sawed it off and kept the bracket attached for the throttle cable spring.

To keep the idle up when using a winch so your batteries don't get drained, or when using PTO equipment.

Another use for high idle - whenever we travel cross-country in either of the diesel-powered trucks we never shut off the engine, this usually means way over 24 hours of non-stop run time, many of which can be accumulated idling at truck stops - years ago I was taught that leaving the diesel engine on low idle for that long periods of time is a big no-no, granted I was driving a big tri-ax at the time but still, better safe than sorry IMHO. Whenever our F600 gets an APU then we'll start shutting the big C down when resting, but the small IHC truck will still be run 24/7 on long trips...
