This morning there was ice on my windshield and all over the truck (it snowed then rained, the snow melted off as i was driving while it snowed). Took a tad bit longer to start up than usual and it actually smoked for 10 seconds unlike the usual one second. I push the pedal past high idle position when its cool like the visor says) Anyway time to plug her in when I'm home.
Plug it in when the engine is cold. Wait a bit. Feel around the block heater to see if its warmer than the rest of the engine. Usually you can hear a noise like an electric kettle makes.
The block heater should be located in the middle freeze plug on the passenger side of the engine block. Look behind the starter.
Quite frequently the block heater itself is fine, but there is an issue at one or both ends of the cord for it. The side you plug in can be easily chopped off and replaced with a regular grounded plug from the hardware store. If the block heater side is messed up, get a replacement cord. I know Napa carries them, other stores may also.
Onus, I was thinking the same thing. I was rather pissed to have to dig the scraper out from behind the seat this morning (and I was already running late) Looks like next week I'll start plugging it in.
We got 8" of snow on Wednesday with a high temp of 26. I plugged the truck in on thursday night, friday morning temp was 14. Started fine friday morning for work, about 3 miles from home she shuddered and died. I found I was not getting fuel at the filter, the summer fuel had gelled. I guess the diesel fuel I last bought was still the summer and not the winter blend. Winter comes early here in Colorado at 9000 feet.
