I just put a sending unit on my 78 f-350, the old one was terribly corroded. The gas Gage does not work, when the truck is comes on all the needle does is slowly rise to the E and I have 7 gallons of gas. The next thing I am going to do is to go into the instrument cluster but I wanted to first check if anyone on here had any ideas?
Thanks
Sounds like the ground at the crossmember (where the sending unit grounds) is lost. This is the next most common issue. Try running a jumper wire from the eyelet where the sending unit grounds up to clean sheetmetal on the bed.
get a piece of wire that fits into the two holes on the plug (if it is a two prong) that goes onto the sending unit (i used soldering wire) and stick one end of the wire into one hole and the other end in the other hole. turn your key on and watch the gas gauge. if it goes straight from E to F, you have something wrong with the sending unit, but if not it is a wiring problem.
