I am looking at two differnt trucks for sale in my local area that are actually affordable. I cant seem to decide on which one would be the best choice. Both from private party individuals.
#1-99.5 F250 supercab 4x4 long bed 6speed 7.3psd. 265k miles. Interior is good, paint is good, no oil leaks or abnormal noises all glow plugs recently replaced, less than 1 year ago. Ranch hand brush guard, rhino lined bed, 5th wheel hitch. new tires. seller asking 8000.
#2- 2004 F250 supercab 4x4 long bed torqshift auto 6.0 psd. 181k miles. Everything else between the two trucks is the same only difference is year, miles and engine. seller asking 10500. No seller knowledge of any head gasket repair or egr repair etc.
No service records on the #2 truck the #1 truck has some records of oil changes, glow plugs, and a clutch 40k ago.
Should I be more worried about the miles on the engine of the 7.3 or the high miles on the auto of the 6.0 truck.
BTW I have driven both trucks, they both start easy, no smoke on startup, no funny noises etc. Just never have had any experience with the 6.0's
Honestly, at that mileage you can expect "things" to happen no matter what truck you go with. The 7.3 is cheaper and easier to repair though. Good luck with whatever you choose.
I know "things" tend to happen with high miles, but i have seen many 7.3s with 500k miles and more still going, just concerned that the auto in the 6.0 has reached or is near its max life expectancy.
I would be less concerned with the auto trans than with the engine! 181k is pretty high mileage for a 6.0 & it will really start runningnup the repair bills with VGTturbo replacement head gaskets EGR cooler & oil cooler, if the guy hasn't kept a repair history on that truck it's an an absolute NO! The 6.0 is a fantastic engine, but it's expensive when it breaks, a rebuilt from ford is close to $15000.00 yes I ment to put that many 0's
I personally wouldn't worry too much on the 7.3 with a good service history 265k is not that high at 350k I would want compression tested &oil analysis before I made an offer! Just my $0.02 good luck

I wouldn't be afraid of the 6.0 mine has 157k on it. And it runs better then alot of 7.3's I know of. People are afraid of the 6.0. Use that as a way to drop some off the price. And keep it around for a rainy day. Who knows you may never need it.
Thanks everyone for the input, i was kinda leaning toward the 7.3 truck over the 6.0 anyhow, and the 7.3s are getting harder to come by. Its really hard to find any diesel truck for under $10k that doesnt have a ton of miles. So my choices are limited.
I bought my 99 with the 7.3/6 speed and have yet to regret it. And it had 258K on the odometer when I bought it. First thing I did was buy a new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel though as I could tell from the pedal feel that the clutch wouldn't last too much longer. Best part is though, I'll likely never have to touch the clutch again as I don't use it to shift, only to take off and stop. I passed on a 99 with an automatic that had 100K fewer miles, knowing that it was just a matter of time before the transmission would need 3 grand worth of rebuild. The 6.0/Auto? NEVER.
