Edit: skip the tilt part, the manual should show you what is needed. Check my Supermotors link on the bottom of the page. If the manual is not there send me a PM and I can email you a photo copy of it.

Here is a good write up I did on the tilt column.

Does your steering wheel pull up and slide down? Well here is your problem. The original locknut that holds the U-joint together on the shaft loosens up. About the only way to solve this is to completely dissassemble the entire column to get to the nut. You could just tighten the nut up once your to this point but I can guarantee that within a few weeks of driving it the nut will again be loose. Replace the nut with a new one and your problems are solved.

This is the tilt mechanism completely taken apart. The spring is not the easiest thing to get back together with the upper and lower unit. You can see the 2 little pins in the bottom of the picture, those are what holds the top and bottom section of the tilt mechanism together.

I use a machine screw and a pair of pliers to pull those pins out. They are not threaded in.

The two halves need to be seperated to take out the wiring harness. I do not pull the wire ends from the plug. When turned the right way they will come out of the upper half.

Look down inside the column there are 2 nuts, 7/16 hex. They have to be loosened then it will all come apart.

Must just be stuck in some way. Those 2 bolts are the only thing holding it all together. Try taking the nuts the whole way off the 2 bolts.

What about the circlip that holds the bearing in place? It also needs to be removed, if it's covered with grease you might miss it! The two bolts that you loosened have square heads that just hook on to the column yikes! I can say not for big hands! good luck.

Applications: 1978/79: Bronco, Econoline, F100/350 / Last MSRP: $102.43 / Dealer net cost: $61.46.

FIVE available NOS from Ford Dealers/obsolete parts vendors: AK (1); GA (1); MO (1); TX (2).

FTE member mikeo0o0o0 has the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog on a CD, can scan and post pics from it.

Ask to see this: Illustration Section 35, Page 33. All the steering column parts are shown in an exploded view.

Ask for this: Illustration Section 35, Page 30: 1978/79 F150 4WD A/T with tilt.

Since there is no pic of 1978/79 F250/350 4WD A/T tilt, the caption should read 1978/79 F150/350 4WD A/T tilt.

The tilt wheel mechanism is similar to misc 1971/79 Passenger Cars, some of the parts are identical, some are still available from Ford.
He has column without tilt, just trying to help

I initially missed the OP's non tilt description, the write up in post #2 threw me off, cuz it's inre to a tilt wheel column.

You saved it by quoting it. I edited the post (#9), so if you look at it again, all references to tilt wheel have been removed.
