Just my $0.02 as a relatively new user here...

I just read through every 6th page of the Excursion rep thread and to be honest, I'm a little turned off to FTE now that I know why, coincidentally, most guys with Excursions have 600 posts and 12 green beans.

There was good intent behind designing the site so that we have the rep system, and it's really been blown up by these clowns.

I always thought guys like "the one of us who fantasizes about a certain species of fish", who don't commonly post in tech forums, had made the post of the century on some obscure thread and got repped for it a million times. Now I realize it's just BS.

What would happen if a very new user took bad advice from an Excursion owner, because of the rep, and ignored a genuinely knowledgeable person who has EARNED their squares? Would they have a very high opinion of FTE?

Y'all know I'm not just making sour grapes of it, as I've repped many of you for various things that made me laugh or helped me with a truck, and as you can see I have what I feel is an appropriate number of squares for the advice or lack thereof that I have contributed here.

IMO the people who give bad info will get their butt handed to them.
The other users are very quick to correct any incorrect tech posts.

We are enjoying the rep GAME. The points don't mean diddly squat!
You will see that there are users from every level enjoying the camaraderie of these threads.

If you spend any time in the tech forums ,this is what you get :
How many forum members does it take to change a light bulb?

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
...
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

1 to move it to the Lighting section

2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section

7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs

5 to flame the spell checkers

3 to correct spelling/grammar flames

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's

3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.
I spent most of my 8000 posts in tech forums & ended up with few reps from them ..

732t37 you have screwed with my friendships.

I've been notified by some users that they will not be making any more posts to that thread.

I'm joining them in that.

I gave you some reps for complaining about reps. If you read threads started by the guys in the rep thread and some of their posts in the tech sections you will see most of them are very giving and do deserve reps.

I can only say this: Life does not have to be stone cold serious, there are such a thing as haveing fun on fourms and etc. but not at other peoples expense.

But I will assure you this much, if you need help with a V-8, V-10 or a diesel the guys are there with the knowledge and the will to help. Now it does not just stop with engine help, it includs the whole truck, including the F-250 and F-350. Many have experiance in all phases of repair. Most I might add have their trucks in excellent condition.

You can normally get a "Help" reply within 5 minutes during decent hours. I have done so.

We do shoot the bull, try not to argue, we just have fun. After all most all of us have done what needs to be done to our trucks and enjoy shareing our experiances and our jokes etc.

New members are welcome.
Respectfully,
URBANXX

Here's the thing my friend, while that thread may have become a "rep party" and has also evolved into an OT chat thread too, what it boils down to is, rep points are meaningless. Always have been, always will be.

For example, for years I've seen newly registered females start posting in the tech forums. I then see very little of them in the tech forum for a few months, then all of a sudden they post again and when they do, I see they're maxed out on green squares.

In six months?? For what??

So I check their previous posts and see where they've been posting in their chapter forum, or the general conversation forums, and I see where guys are ***** nilly giving them reps because they posted something funny, or flirtatious or for no reason at all!

Does that fit into the rep system you've envisioned? I doubt it.

Another example: After I've been here a few years, and I've been trying to pay back what I've learned here in the tech forums, I see someone post about greenies and how they give reps out ***** nilly in the FTE Club forum (accessible only if you're a paying supporter of FTE) for political views shared, or funny jokes posted, or sexy pictures posted, etc.

Does that fit into the rep system you've envisioned? I seriously doubt it. You know why? Because it didn't fit into the way I envisioned it a few years back.

Now, it's taken me years, but I've earned every single dark green and light green box associated with my user name from nothing BUT tech posts in the tech forums (almost exclusively in the 7.3L PSD forum). Does that make my rep points more valuable?

Nope.

I was happy Joe posted that rep thread in the Ex forum. I've posted more help in that forum than anywhere else, but received the least amount of rep points for my efforts from that forum.

Rep points don't mean a hill of squat. Not when rep points are thrown about in the non-tech forums like its nothing, especially when they're thrown at women just because they're females.

Sorry, if anyone has a grip here regarding the way some people are getting reps it would be me, because while I cannot earn any more green boxes, I can honestly say every single box I've earned was from reps given because of help I've posted, before that rep thread in the Excursion forum was even authored.

Yet I give them out freely and frequently because it's fun. And having more than less doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things.

Stewart

I agree with Stewart. I have been givin reps for the fact that I'm crazy, posted something funny, pooped my pants, or whatever. I have helped so may people on her, some multipul times without a rep, or even a thank you. Later, I'll see someone give help with the problem I straightened out, and taking credit for it. The goal is to help each other here. reps are fun, but I can't fill my gas tank with them.
