Rock, we don't do big celebrations for birthdays here either. Christmas has always been a big family event because of The Reason For The Season, but birthdays haven't really been too important to me....until recently.
Things started changing back when my father passed away in September of '03, probably because I realized I was getting older and I needed to enjoy each year as it happened, and appreciate and celebrate the annual milestone.

I recall having that same experience and it does modify your out look on life. I like to give smiles now to strangers. Heres one from this morning.
I was going to cook some breakfast but then thought wha the heck I will just run down to Whataburger and buy us some. So when I was there the gal at the pay wondow took my money and then went to off to do somehing. I noticed that she had a troubled look and so when she came back and opened the window I reach out and handed her a dollar. She siad oh uh did I-- I siad thats for a smile and there is was from ear to ear. I use to not do that sort of thing before my parents passed. I think to do that all the time now. There was a lady at Walmart. I got in line and was the only one there at the check out and she came around the corner and I saw her see me there and then she looked around. She actully was a Walmart worker and may have been on lunch anyhow I told her hey why dont you go in front of me. She said are you sure? Oh yeah go ahead. Should have seen her face. It was worth every minute of the 3 or 4 it took for her to get check out.
Smiles are free so I give them now. Funny how life events change your outlook on it. Its actually quite nice to be nice.
Well guys, come morning time, I'll be drinking my coffee and celebrating my 47th birthday. Because I wanna get up early and spend the morning cooking breakfast for my lovely wife before she heads off for her chemistry final at the junior college, I need to hit the sack early, so apologies, but The Midnight Repper will be postponing his 10 hits until sometime in the AM.
