90 f150 4x4 supercab coil questions

Just got the truck and the front springs have got to go. Firstly, the truck sags in the front, it looks like it's taller than stock, but there are no blocks in the rear. To help balance it out, someone installed some cheap spring spacer things that go between the coils and you tighten the bolts to spread the spring out. They are rusty and cockeyed and I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. SO. I also have a shortbed 89 f150 4x4 that has springs that are about the same height as these, but they are NOT modified. The 90 has single front shocks, the 89 has dual. Can I swap these springs over with no issue? Otherwise, how do I get the right springs to make the truck sit level? Is there a difference between a spring for a dual shock setup and a single? I'm thinking maybe the one for a dual shock is a little beefier? That would be fine by me if that's the only issue.

1990 f150 2wd, swap in 4wd 3" lift coils

I got a 1990 f150 2wd, with 4.9L. My friends and I took the springs out of his dad's earlier model, same generation, f150 4wd with a 5.0L. This truck had a 2-3" Rancho lift kit. The kit came with bigger springs, longer shocks, and a camber adjuster. The adjuster turned out to be the problem in the swap. Taking my springs out and swaping them with the beefy springs was no problem. I had to take my truck, after I put the beefy springs in, to the alignment shop to find out what camber adjuster I needed to correct my alignment. I had to do that because my truck was a 2wd and I could not find a multi-adjuster like the one on the 4wd truck. As for the dual shocks on the 4wd; the two shocks are needed because its a 4wd and there would be too much wheel hop with one shock per tire only. Word to the wise, when you begin to remove either shock ratched down a tie down so that it does not shoot through the fender or you. And repack the wheel bearings and replace the ball joints.

The springs were 4" longer then my stock springs not compressed. It lifted my truck ~3".

Both of my trucks are 4x4, one has dual shocks and one doesn't. From what I've seen it was an option.

As for the spring popping out, I have the correct spring compressors to remove it so no worries there.

Thanks for the help, I'm gonna see if I can get the "good" ones out tomorrow,, the nut holding them in the bottom looks pretty stuck and compare them side by side.

What are you talking about? 4 shocks for wheel hop? It was an option.

2nd, when will a shock go flying through the air? The spring won't go anywhere either, it is held on by a huge nut on the bottom. No compressor is needed to remove or install these springs.

3rd, I do believe the Super Cab springs are stiffer. If you order a lift, they all specify reg or ext cab.

Yes, the supercab springs are stiffer than the regular cab. Best I can remember they 50-75 foot pounds per inch stiffer.

coil springs

Have you looked at the first thread on page one (1) and opened the section on coil springs. This data might help. If you remove the shock and then lower the axle and spring assembly (support the frame on stands) there is very little danger of it getting away from you. I know of no time when the shock would fly out and danger you.

No more than they cost, and considering they raised my truck 1.5" with stock length coils, I would spend the $100 and get the Moog springs.

Just my humble opinion.

I thought about that, but I already have to buy both fuel pumps, the rear tank and a bed. This is just going to be a "get me through the winter" truck, so I don't want to spend a lot on it. I'm rebuilding a 78 SuperCab that is where all my money is going, and plan on selling this truck in the spring to help with that. Don't get me wrong, I'm not half-assing it, I am just trying to use what I have.

Here's what I'm working with:

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a204/KBrian/parts%20and%2089/21bf3ced.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

They are ONLY on the passenger side. *banghead*

I still haven't even started pulling the springs yet, I'm working on the fuel tanks and bought a bed today, plus I'm scrapping out my 89 and trying to salvage what I can. Hopefully this weekend I can get it all done.

I have a 1990 fi50 XLT Lariat Super-Cab 4x4. It has many issues, and is driving me nuts! It's had steering issues for about 2 years (Way to much play in the wheel). Then, the transmission starting acting up(Like jumping out of gear, and banging it's way through the gears). You won't believe what happened this morning. My job is 40 miles from my home. On my way home this morning , I was doing about 70mph on the interstate, when i heard a loud bang. When I got home, I was giving it a once over and found that the left front coil spring had exploded. I was working on it today and broke 2 of the break lines, I have had enough, Ha Ha!
