To start I have a 97 f250LD with 172k, I've owned since 2002. Some maintenance history on the truck, just changed the oil and fuel filter, spark plugs are about due 75k on them.
The Problem: I am currently have an issue with my #1 cylinder, where it doesn't sound like it's firing. I have no code, no reduction in mileage, and fluids have not gone down. I mainly have the issue when the engine in idling/low RPMs, when the engine is at highway speed it sounds fine. I'm leaning towards the Ignition coil, or a bad injector, is there a way to test the coil to make sure it is working.
No reliable test for a coil by the owner.
What motor do you have.
At the mileage, a compression test might be good to do to see if the cylinder is down on compression.
A coil, an injector or plug that does not fire will set a code because the crank sensor measures the rotation time for each cylinder and will detect it.
If your's smoothes out at speed, it is still down on power but may still fire even if there is a cylinder seal problem with some compression left to work..
You have to go deeper than just surface checks.
I have the 4.6L non windsor. I will try and do a compression test this weekend. I don't think it's the MAF as the engine is not slow or sluggish. Actually, if it wasn't for hearing the noise you would never now there was an issue. Would a exhust leak or bad gasket be a potential cause? as I know I have a few exhust manifold bolts that are getting quite rusted
