i have a 99 f250 with the 5.4L and a 5pd tranny. i notice a whine outside of the vehicle when i start driving it and it goes away after 5min or so. i assume this is the throwout bearing. is there anyway i can grease the bearing??
A throw out baring is usually more of a rattle or squeal than a whine and the noise "usually" changes when you push the clutch in or let it out. I know on semi's they are greaseable not sure about a pick up though there should be an inspection plate on the bell housing you could pull off and shine a light in there and see if there is a grease zerk on the baring but I doubt it. A wine sounds more like the power steering pump have you checked the fluid level in it?
I just got through putting a clutch in my 2000. The throwout bearings are not greaseable. Also there is not a real access cover on the transmission to get to it. There is a tin cover on the front of the trans that they call an access cover, however all the engine to trans bolts have to be out to remove this cover, and then you really cant see anything but the back of the flywheel from it. I believe the throwout bearing from ford cost me $130.
