Overdrive shifter button - Flashing

Greetings KoSUV pros,

I'm a newbie to my Excursion and the 7.3L class of vehicle. I bought a 2002 X in August with the 7.3L with only 28K on it. I bought for the express purpose of towing my est. 5500lb Airstream trailer. It does that great but here's my question: Yesterday when I was towing back home I was shifting from OD to drive when the freeway became steep to ensure that I was not lugging the motor or putting to much stress on the tranny. Anyway, all was fine until I got off onto surface streets near my home and I once again pushed the shifter button to OD off and the light came on indicating "off". When I went to return the shifter back to OD the light started flashing and did not seem to go back into OD. This continued until I got home with the light still flashing. I also thought while it was in the flashing mode that it shifted a bit hard between 2nd and 3rd. Hopefully someone will have some insight into what is going on. I also would like to know what folks think about towing in general with OD on or off. Should you use OD when on freeways or hiways? Thanks ahead of time for any help.

It happens to me sometimes when towing my camper. The code will show a 3-4 shift error. It seems to happen when you have rolling hills and it starts hunting for the correct gear. If you take off the od button when it starts hunting it will keep it from throwing the code.

On.

Yep.

About the only time you wanna take the trans out of OD is when you're on a grade and the transmission starts hunting between gears.

What mods have you done to the rig? Where in California are you located?

I agree, I wouldn't touch the OD button unless maybe you are on a long steep downhill grade.

OD on... and the flashing OD light could be 1 of many things. your best bet is to find some one that can read the code for you. or if you have an extra $300 just get autoenginuity scantool. it will pay for it self. My OD light started flashing right before the trans gave up and died on me. not saying thats going to happen but better safe than sorry.
