New purchase input needed

My current tow vehicle is a 2002 Ford Excursion 4x4 7.3 PSD. It has been a trouble free vehilce for 170,000 miles. I am thinking about selling it and getting a new Superduty Crew Cab pickup. I had looked at the F150, but with everything I haul I think I would probably go over the payload capacity even with the max payload package. I am a strong proponent of having too much truck vs being at the max numbers.....

I test drove a F350 LB 4x4 long bed with the 6.7 and 3.31 open rear end and an F250 4x4 short bed with the 6.2 and 3.75 ELD. The F350 was a bare bones work truck configuration, it rode nicely and I was amazed at the power from the 6.7! The F250 with the 6.2 rode nicely and the engine had plenty of power even though it didn't have the seat of the pants feel of the 6.7. I did notice that the 6.2 downshifted more on the same loop than the 6.7 did. Both engines impressed me and I am sure that I could be happy with either. I am looking at left over 2011's to see if there are any screaming deals as that is what it would take for me to jump now vs waiting a year.

Now for my question. I currently have a 5,000 lb trailer, but plan to upgrade in the next couple of years to a trailer in the 9,000 lb range. The truck will have a canopy, dog boxes, dogs and lots of gear in it. I keep my rigs for a long time and would keep the Excursion, but with my youngest kid about to head off to college I need more room for dogs and their crates and less room for kids to recline in the second row.

I am trying to decide between a F350 long bed and a F250 short bed and between the 2 engines. I have been pouring over the forums, but would like peoples input on both configurations and engines. My calculations for my typical driving will only show a diference of fuel cost of $40 per month with the 6.2 being more thirsty. I realize that the 6.7 will need additional exhaust fluid and maintenance as well. This will be my daily driver with about 30 to 40 miles put on it a day. It will be used for hunting and camping and family vacations.

There are still quite a few 2011 Superduty trucks in my area, so if the pricing were right I might buy off the lot instead of ordering from the factory if I found the right rig. Otherwise I will just wait and get one when the incentives are high again.

Thanks in advance for any input.
Pat

Hello,
You should be getting all sorts of people chiming in on the argument for both sides. Gas vs Diesel.

I have had both. Currently I have a 2009 that I bought new in Feb of 2010. It was the last 09 on the lot and has a V10. The dealer gave me 10K off the price due to being the last and I talked them into another 2K off do to gas prices being so high.

I have no problems pulling or doing what ever I have to do with the gasser. I will most likely not go back to a diesel. I save alot of money on maintance. Since you say you figured out that the difference for you would be about 40.00 bucks I would go with the gasser.

The initial cost of the truck will be less. There would be more room to bargin for a gasser, since it seems that most people want that diesel.

If you were even looking at a F150 then the F250 Gasser would be the way to go IMO.
