I have a 99SD with 194k miles on it, I installed a B&D 50hp chip 140K miles ago. The problem is the engine will just quit going down the road. It sounds like the same problem when the CPS goes out but I have replaced it twice and still have the same problem. Could the Chip go out and be causing this problem?????? Frustrated
I know some chipped trucks had no start issues if the coating was not completely removed from the contacts of the PCM circuit board. I would go back and remove the chip and give the contacts a good cleaning with isopropl alochol and see what happens. Also, make sure the chip plugs in nice and snug. You may need some velco or tape to hold it in securely. If this does not work remove the chip completely and see what happens.
The chip is installed correctly I haven't had any trouble until here lately about 4k miles ago. I am going to take the chip out and see what happens, I was curious if the chip could possibly need to be reflashed? But if the problem is not the chip and not the CPS what else might the problem be?
I am no expert on this problem.Having said that, I personally know of a couple of SD diesel owners that had cam position sensors fail and it lead to engine quitting problems.
A friend of mine had a 97 PS chipped, dont know which brand he had. he had around 100k on the chip, and after he would drive for about 45mins the truck would quit and over to the side of the road he went. He said at first it would start back up after a short wait then it went downhill and would not restart after quiting. He had the truck towed home and it sit for about 2 weeks then he pulled the chip and it ran fine and did not shut down. He sent the chip back and they said it had a crack in the circuit board and they replaced it. Good luck
