Just trying to get a few more HP and who knows; maybe an extra mpg. 77 stock 302 auto. Should finish installing header and duals today. Rebuilt stock 2 barrell and it is fine. Looking at carb threads I keep seeing everyone talking 600 cfm but that seems a bit much to me. This is for arround town and once a month 5 -6 hundred mile camping trip. Max load 1500 lbs. Just want to pull up hill a bit better. Wouldn't something like a 500 cfm Edelbrock be about the best choice. I have no idea what the stock 2 barrel flows but i would think the 500 and a better intake would be closer to what I am looking for. Already installed electric fan. Working on a budget.
A 500 would be a good choice for what you're looking for.
I have a 600cfm Edelbrock on my 79 F100 302 C4. I drive it daily, it has great throttle response, and pulls hard when the secondaries open. It may not be "mathmatecially" correct but it works fine for me. I have been averaging around 15mpg.
What model carb is it. They have a 600 "Economy 1400" and a "Towing 1405". Trying to figure which way to go. I'm leaning towards the 1405 as I am more concearned with being able to get up hills a bit better. I know this will never be a power house. Just need a bit more.

Mine is the 1405 a buddy gave me off his 66 Mustang. It was calibrated a bit rich so I tuned it with a wideband oxygen sensor, now she runs like a charm.

2x with a 600 cfm. The reason a 600 is still okay with a 302 is that it maintains the air-fuel velocity for stock or mildly modified engines. A big ol' honkin 750 or 850 on a 302 would introduce a huge volume of air (and fuel) at low pressure that cannot be handled by the combustion chambers of a 302 unless it is cammed with big valves and turning more than 7000 rpm.
Since you're improving the engine's efficiency with headers and dual exhaust system, the 600 cfm can still maintain the AF velocity and volumetric efficiency.
plus if it's a vac 2nds carby then it's fine anyway because they don't open until later on... mechanical 2nds and it won't run very well for you though.
