'04 6.0 no start

Hey guys, the last two times i started my truck she seemed to lope real bad and sound like she was starving for fuel, after minute or 2 ran fine. 3rd day got in and wont start, same starving of fuel( seems like) change fule filters ( thought may have gotten bad fuel) same thing. Im getting code 2617 which says camshaft position sensor. Its not expensive so ill try anyway. But ive got a lot of smoke coming from the pipe so im assuming getting fuel isnt the problem. Waht im wondering is can this camshaft sensor come and go like that. I had a 7.3l that had a crankshaft sensor go in and out just wondering if its the same kinda thing. And if anyone has a trick to remove this sensor anything would be appreicated.

As far as replacing it, it's in a tight spot behind the power steering pump, but you can do it from underneath without taking anything else out.

they dont normaly fail like the 7.3

one slight mistake your code comes up the Crankshaft Position sensor

P2617 Crankshaft Position Output Circuit / Open

And its a pain otherside by the A/C pump

Blade35 you were right it was throwing 2614 and 2617, 2617 being the crank and 2614 being the cam.

The sensor is located about 4 inches behind the a/c comprssor.
First - disconnect the batteries!

A bracket will then need to be removed: The two lines to the tranny filter go under the bracket (wiring bundle bracket that also secures the ground wires to the block above the oil pan and above the steering stabilizer) that needs to be unbolted to gain access. It is held in with an 8mm bolt - a long (16 inch) extension with a pivoting adapter is what is needed. Long needle nose pliers with a 45 degree bend would have helped also.

Like stated before, unplug sensor before removing and plug it in after installing. (The wire is not long enough to make it easier after removing sensor.) Long skinny arms and a lift will help alot.

Crankshaft sensors rarely fail. Check for wire chafing

I dont remember losing the tach, like i said once it was running 1 or 2 minutes, no hiccups at all.

All wiring appears to be good, still in the loom. Im gonna try some of the other testing i guess, seems the parts the codes show are supposedly pretty reliable.
