I'll bump to the top. We have a excelent ford parts person "Numbersdummy". Hopefully he will be along shortly to help. FTE is a fun ride with great people.. chuck
Jacko, do a google search on ford base part numbers. There are several sites what will be helpful. C =1960's production C8=1968 and D9=1979, The 3rd letter "A" means full size Ford. The 4th letter indicates the engineering activity, like engine, body, service part, etc. Maybe the number dummy will come along with all the answers like he usually does.
Instead of the casting numbers, you need to find the little metal tag affixed under a bolt head and post the info found on that. That's the only thing that will help you with correct identification. A steering box casting with those engineering numbers could be found on many Ford vehicles. The application info they share is extremely limited. I just noticed the other day the steering box in my '95 Ranger pickup has a casting number starting with D9A, which the lay person might interpret to mean 1979 LTD.
