i am wanting to impliment power steering into my 1960 f100 2x4 and need some help. i have heard it done with a toyota steering box but i don't know what year and model to use. i am not interested in using a ram assist as i have heard of numerous problems with it and would like a tighter steering "feel".
i also wonder if an 87 and older gm steering box would work, but do not know what kind of parts i would need to look for. so if anyone has any info i would greatly appreciate the help!
If you go with the Toyota box, what you want to look for is the 1979 through 1985 4x4 box (either truck or 4runner). Basically the box off the trucks that still had a solid front axle, in 1985 Toyota started changing over to independant front suspension and those boxes wont work.
Oh, and by the way, Welcome to the board and to the wonderful FTE family. This site is full of a bunch of very smart and funny people that are always quick to help someone out.
The 2 boxes are a completely different design. The earlier 79-85 boxes are almost identical to the original Ford box in size and function, both were made for solid front axle steering set-ups. The later, 85 and up, toyota boxes are cross steering boxes designed for independent front suspension. While you could probably make the later box work it would take a lot more fabrication that the 79-85 box.
The 79-85 box mounts inside the frame rail in the original location, the later boxes mount on the outside of the frame rail.
Thanks for the info. I will keep looking for an older one.
Just go to www.car-parts.com and do a search, there were 3 pages of places offering them a week or so ago. Most were 75-100.00. Be sure to ask for the lines and fittings, the return line fitting is an oddball 17mm size that is hard to find. MidFifty and Gotta show have hoses and fittings if you don't get the hoses.
