I have a 73 F-100, but it has an 85 302 in it. It currently has a 600cc 4b with electric choke.
When I start it in the mornings, it jumps up and stays around 2k rpm. I let it warm up at that speed and then bump the throttle when i'm ready to leave which drops it to 700 rpm. When I put it in gear it drops down to 500 rpm and then when I give it gas it a little bit of gas, it jumps to a 1k rpm idle (while holding the brake at a dead stop). When I put it back into park or neutral, it jumps back up to the 2k rpm mark. Is this normal?
This is my first non FI vehicle, so I apologize if this is a stupid question.
IMO, the truck just isn't quite ready to leave when you are ready to leave and needs a bit more time to warm up.
The seemingly fluctuating idle seems normal to me because the choke is resetting itself to where it should be based on the choke cycle.
Fast idle speed at 2000 rpm is high but it's easy enough to adjust it down to around 1200 rpm.
Thanks for the info. I'm still a little confused though . When the pickup is warmed up and i've been driving it for awhile, the idle is right around 1K in gear or park. It's just when it is cold that the RPM's are at the 2K mark. If I lower the idle (via the idle set screw), won't it lower both my warm and cold idle? Again, this is all new to me and i'm learning as i go.
