Question 4WD Hubs

Helping a friend change front rotors on a '79 F-150 4X4. I think it has the Dana 60 front end. It's a solid front axle. No luck getting the hubs off. All the snap rings are out, and most of the guts are out except for like some inner clutch. Anyways, bottom line is that we can't get the hub and rotor assembly off.
Need help

Did you remove the snap-ring on the axle shaft?

I'm assuming you already got the inner hubsnap ring also? Other than that it , the rest should pull out

That's what I had thought. Both the internal hub ring, and axle snap ring have been removed. Now do both the hub and rotor pull off at that point, or is the brake rotor retained by something else.

The rotor and hub should then pull off. The rotor is retained to the hub by the wheel studs

Ok got the manual out, after the hub components are removed there should be a wheel bearing lock nut, lock ring then a adjusting nut. I knew i forgot something.

I just did the same thing this past summer when I put in some Warn hubs. Are you sure that you have BOTH snap/lock rings out? The small one that is on the axle shaft and the internal snap ring that is seated in the groove of the hub. That internal ring is very thin and is so well seated into that groove that it is easy to miss and can be difficult to get out. Once both of those rings are out the hub assembly should come right off except sometimes the inner bearing can "grab" the shaft pretty tight and that can be a pain. Good luck!

Once the internal snap ring is out, you need to get the splined "hub" out of the wheel hub to access the nut, lock ring and inner nut that holds the bearing to the spindle.
Hope this helps.

Are you sure it's a dana 60 and not a dana44?

I did a tech article on replacing u-joints on a d44 axle. It has pictures of the entire process including the snap rings, bearing retainer nut, and lock nut. If the d60 is similar to the 44, it might help a little.

You can find it here.

Good luck.
