4R100
Are all 4R100 trans from a SD diesel the same? My friend has one sitting in his shop and he said i can use that one to get rebuilt and give him the one in my truck so that we can just swap it out in one day.

The 4r100 from a gasser engine has a different tail housing.

Correct. Iirc the differences in the tails have to do with the number of splints on the tcase shaft.
I was told the 4r100 gasser tranny was stronger b/c of the beefier shaft.

The diesel 4R100's have stronger internals compared to the gas 4R100, except for the 4R100's used for the Gen 2 Lightning's.
The Gen 2 Lightnings have the same internals used in the diesel 4R100's.

Interesting info Stewart! Guess that's a mute point for our application since jw and BTS have better options.

Nope. It wasn't something we discussed on the Lightning boards I used to be a part of years ago.

The difference is in the bell housing. Diesel uses a different bolt pattern. A gasser tranny will not bolt to a diesel.
All gas and diesel 4R100s use the same tailshaft.

And all 4x4 transmissions have a different tailshaft than 4x2 transmissions.

You also have PTO and non PTO versions. Here in AUS they are mainly the PTO version. JW told me you cant put a non PTO version into a PTO truck. Different gears and sensors apparently.
This cover plate indicates PTO version

JW is wrong. You can put a non-PTO trans in a PTO truck. You just won't have the PTO function.
