I have an 84 f150 swb with a 300 six and a T-18 4 speed. I now want to swap in a V8 but cant decide which engine to swap in,ideally id want a 4.6 or 5.4 but I dont know enough about them to buy one nor am i particularly interested in the fuel injection so on to what i already have that can go in it first i have a good running 79 400m that is 100% complete and has a 4 barrel intake/carb,next i have a decent 74 390 2 barrel lastly i have 2 351 windsors 1 70 model 2 barrel it needs a ring job the other is a roller cammed 96 model from an E250and ran good when pulled! for the record i have absolutely no desire to put a 302 in it i would be better to leave the 300 in for 2 more cubic inches and far less torqe it just isnt worth the trouble. also I have no emissions constraints or rules to follow about engine swaps, any advice, suggestions,or ideas are greatly appreciated
I would go the 96 351w. it will be the easiest as like ctubutis said it will bolt to the trans.
You will need to get the proper flywheel for the 351W and clutch. Motor mounts, motor mount perches, V8 throttle cable and bracket, exhaust manifolds ect, V8 radiator. I can't remember if the 6cyl alt, power steering pump will work on the V8 or not. I don't think the Alternator will. Also get a carded intake for the motor and carb, and filter housing. if the 96 is still setup for EFI then you will need to replace the timing cover to one that will accept a mechanical fuel pump. Make sure the fuel pump eccentric is on the cam too. I doubt it would be being as it's EFI. Also you need to decide if you want to run V belts or a serpentine belt for the motor. It's not hard to do at all. Just take your time and get the parts ahead of time. I'm sure I am missing a few things but it at least give you an idea. I did the same thing about 9 years ago.
Thanks for the info i kinda figured on the 351 i however figured everyone to lean to the 70 model as for parts i have enough frame mounts, bellhousings, radiators, flywheels and anything else i would not buy new AND its even marked so i know what it fits! I have everything to put the windsor or the 400m in the truck. now on to more questions. If i go with the EFI 351 which is complete the only 2 issues i can think of are the fuel lines/pump and the a/c compressor my truck has dual tanks which i desire to keep and a single line to the pump and the efi requires a return line and a 6 port tank valve and probably a pump in each tank. As for the a/c compressor they mount totally different and the lines are different the only thing i can think of is to pirate the condensor and evaporator off a 92-96 F series. Additionally the efi harness came from a van with an E4OD so it is wired for that ;will i need a diferent harness/computer? Lastly I am leaning toward the 400M,I am just afraid that i will dislike it as much as i did when it was in my 72 f350! Thanks for your opinion/advice goood or bad it all helps
You will need the computer & harness & sending unit/pumps & return lines for the EFI and the E40D.
The 400 can be a GREAT truck engine (look through the stickies in the 335 forum here, I have that engine myself) I'd suggest a straight-up timing set and a cam since you already have the 4V carby. Headers are good for it, too.
But you'll need a bell housing and/or mechanical clutch and/or transmission to fit it.
I'm partial to the 351W if you are swapping out the 300. Enough torque to do the job and yet reasonable gas mileage - for an old pickup. I'm building a new one for mine and all indications are I'll have 275 HP and 400 ft-lbs from a very mild engine. And, there is a good possibility of getting 15 MPG.
I dont know enough about them to buy one nor am i particularly interested in the fuel injection so on to what i already have that can go in it
Upon this quote it seems you want to stay with a carburetor.... Then u say...

I believe you can take the EFI 351W and swap a 4 barrel intake on it with the EFI heads. That would be simple and less hassel then trying to get the EFI setup. Also your MPG will not be any different from what I have read. I feel a properly tuned carb will perform just as good as EFI. Just my $.02. Either way good luck.
