I have the 10 hole alloy wheels, and they look like crap. I doesn't seem there is a coating on them yet trying to clean them (I haven't tried cleaning them with a chemical) does nothing. They have a transparent rust color for lack of a better description, any idea on what to try to clean them with?
I have the same wheel problem, and have put a lot of thought the past week as to what to do to clean up the rust, especially in the smaller color coated holes. My conclusion is as there is a myriad of cleaners to use for wheels, something with a "lite" corrosive activity is in order. I'm going to use Muriatic acid sparingly, as you don't want to weaken the metal, and keep a garden hose close to rinse quickly, as I want repaint the color coated holes with paint to match the body. I will try a self etching primer, and go from there, No matter what you use, READ the directions BEFORE using...Good Luck!!!
Yeah even though the truck is a bit rough nice wheels will make it look better. Got alot of chemicals at work, will try some of them next weekend, will start with a non-acid and step up to acid if needed.
i took my factory rims off my '88 (10 hole factory alloys) to a shop that does ploishing & plating) and had all the clear & corrosion stripped off, then the wheels were polished. looked like they had been chromed afterwards. was told to never run them durning the winter again (and i didnt, had a 2nd set of steel rims for winter use anyhow) really made the truck. dont recall the cost, was about 20 years ago anyhow.
