Another HPFP thread (question)

Regarding the cost of pre-failure replacement.... Everyone knows what Rick's mess cost, but that was because of all the collateral damage done to the entire fuel system due to his failing - if I read everything correctly. However, if a pump is replaced (say, under a recall or whatever) BEFORE failing and doing any damage, then wouldn't the cost be substantially lower? I mean, they wouldn't have to replace the entire system, would they? Just the pump?

In theory, yes. The part is only $850 through Parts Guy Ed, and this can be replaced with the cab in place. I'm not sure what the flat-rate labor time is for the job, but I would guess around 4 or 5 hours.

What happens if something fails as a result of replacing the HPFP under a theoretical recall?
Who is responsible?

One of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" deals but then again a failure is worse.

First of all, I highly doubt there will be a recall. There have been a lot of failures for the Siemens system on the 6.4s, and we have yet to see a recall. At this point these Bosch pumps have been much more reliable from my perspective.

Secondly, if there is a fault bad enough to necessitate a recall, believe me you want that thing replaced! What would fail as a result of a shiny new pump?
