I have a 1990 F-150 XL 4x4 with a bad engine in it......302 4 speed auto, and a 1990 f-150 XLT lariat 2wd with the same engine only it has the E4OD tranny on it......engine runs awsome.....can i swap the engines between these 2 trucks??.....i don't see why everyhting wouldn't be the same there. If i can anyone wana buy an xlt lariat with a bad engine??
That should be a very easy swap. I would check the flexplates and make sure they are the same, but other than that it is just removing one motor and putting the other in. The differences between XL and XLT are just cosmetic. The differences between the 4x4 and 2x4 have no effect on the engine.
Make sure you keep the flexplates with the transmissions when you swap engines; in other words, take the flexplate off of the bad engine and put it on the good engine. The flexplates that mate a 302 to an AOD and a 302 to an E4OD are NOT identical. Each flexplate will have a small stamped oval on it about 1/2" x 1"; the one from the truck with the bad engine should have AOD in the oval. The other flexplate will have C6/E4 in the middle of the oval.
Everything about these flexplates - diameter, number of gear teeth, converter bolt pattern, engine balance is identical - EXCEPT the C6/E4 flexplate locates the converter about .2" farther aft or deeper into the transmission than the AOD flexplate. Using the C6/E4 flexplate with the AOD means transmission death.
Otherwise, this should be as simple as an engine swap gets.
hope so, post some pics when it's all done, you might even want to consider a dress up kit for the motor, and paint the air cleaner box with chrome paint. (might look silly, but it turns heads at the shows.)
