Finally got a gauge so I have accurate information. Edge Insight arrived the other day and I have put a few hundred miles on it since.
Cruising my delta is no more than 8-9 degrees but my temps hover around 170F while cruising empty at 55mph. The only time that I saw 190F was when I pulled my boat. Just curious if this thing is running cold.
I was under the impression that a cold running engine made the mileage decrease.
I just checked my temps the other day. My truck was running 190 to 200 water temp unloaded. If urs only runnin 170 unloaded. That's to low. Should b around 190.
Time for a new thermostat, that ect is way too low. Mine ran low also, not that low but around 180 unloaded. After replacing the thermostat it now runs 188 - 190 all day, a little more if pulling a grade or towing.
I was under the impression that a cold running engine made the mileage decrease.
Just curious for your thoughts...

That used to be the case for a gas burner but not for fuel injection and definitely not on a diesel. You'll get better engine efficiency running at the correct temperature especially when the PCM is looking for a particular set of values for optimum performance.
