It's purpose is to filter out crud. Behind that screen is a tiny orifice, I think 0.02 inch opening, which allows some fuel but mostly air to vent out of the filter and recirculate back to the tank.
So can a missing screen ruin injectors or just let this hole get clogged faster?
The screen is on the unfiltered side on the filter (outside). If the hole or screen gets clogged up then venting air would be a problem since any air in the fuel would have to flow through the heads creating problems with fuel pressure in the injectors. Air compress's where full does not, something you don't want in the injectors.
