I think the power window regulator on my '87 BII XLT broke yesterday. The window stalled after going up about an inch. Now, instead of moving the window up and down, the motor just makes a clicking noise. I'm guessing a gear or something in the regulator stripped. I took the panel off and I can move the window up and down by hand, so the window isn't stuck. Anyone familiar with these and how they break? Is it something that can be repaired or do I just need to replace the regulator? Do these regulators break frequently, or would I likely get a good one from the junkyard? How about converting to manual windows (not all that fond of power windows anyway)?
Maybe this will help a little when you go to take it out.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Open the window. Remove the trim panel and watershield and support the window.
Disconnect the power window motor connector.
There may be a drill dimple in the door panel, opposite the concealed motor retaining bolt. Drill out the dimple to gain access to the bolt. Be careful to avoid damage to the wires. Remove the motor mounting bolts and remove the motor and regulator assembly.
Separate the motor and drive from the regulator on a workbench.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Check for smooth operation before installing the trim panel.
I have rebuilt many of them. Usually you will find that the large plastic drive gear that the worm on the motor turns has seperated from its hub. This hub shaft drives the gear segment on the window regulator. The fix I have used is to put three pieces of teflon rod, 3/8" dia by about 3/8" long between the gear and the hub. It is made so that these pieces will fit right in there, then, but the three screw cover back on. You might want to put a bit of grease in the gear box first.
