I have a 81 351m engine. Im getting a spare 400 engine which has a broken rod. im guessing the block is no good now but the crank, heads and intake are okay. im thinking about building my 351m into a 400. my first step is to use the 400 heads on my 351m. Im wondering what could be done to the heads to gain more power. what could i do to the valves, intake and exhaust, can i mill them for more compression? if so how much should be taken off? thanks alot.
You can do some clean up on them unless you are going to make some all-out motor out of it, in which case you'll want to get some porting info. Valve springs will be dictated by whatever cam you get. Note the stock cam is hopeless.
For compression, it's pistons you need to fix that along with the 400 crank and rod for proper compression height.
Ford Brotherhood,
do you happen to have a D5AE-BA head? Casting number in valve cover area near end exhaust valve. Have one here ready to go and need another. If in California maybe able to pick-up, otherwise will have to make arrangements. How about it? Call 405-227-8556 or 858-560-1957. Thanks for the posting and consideration. Dan

Is this a 351m or 400 head you are looking for? They are all the same. You should be able to find one anywhere if that's what you are looking for, unless they have all been crushed by now.
Hey Dave F,
thanks for the reply. The D5AE-BA we now have was taken off the 400 some time ago and ported/polished then noticed the ports were not the same as the -G2B head laying there. Now have D1AE-A1C heads on the engine with all roller valve train. But need a Matching Pair for the next engine build in work. Rather fond of the -BA head now and like matching castings.
Thanks for the consideration, Dan
