I have a 2004 6.0 that I bought in 2006 with 21,000 miles on it. Completely stock. I have checked my gas miliage dozens of times and always get between 15.2 to 15.8 miles per gallon. Towing is about 11 miles per gallon. I have always been skeptical of claims of 20 plus miles per gallon. Last month before a 1,200 mile trip to Northern California I replaced both of my batteries which were original as they were testing about 11.4 volts. The truck was disconnected for about 7 hours.
As I have harpooned the tank I am able to fill right to the top before I left When I filled up at 455 miles it took only 22.5 gallons of fuel. Thats about 20.2 miles per gallon. My miliage was about the same for the rest of the trip. The only change I have made was the batteries so could the computer have reset to the original setting? Needless to say I am thrilled at the new fuel miliage.
I don't think so on the PCM getting "reprogrammed". Now the 5R110 would loose it's stored memory on shift patterns; it would have had to re-learn them according to how you drive. So it's possible the tranny is shifting more efficiently. Or the fact that your on a road trip (without the trailer?) so the truck is able to run more efficiently than it would in town.
