Ok so I got my hands on and old 83 full size xlt. Motor isnt locked, everything is stock except for a battery, solenoid, and starter that i recently replaced. The truck will turn over and everything however my throttle pedal doesnt do squat. it doesnt pull the cable or anything i need help with that issue i tried looking at everything under the hood while a buddy messed with the pedal and it just wiggles a little but doesnt open the carb. I know a handful about old trucks but im dumbfounded about this. I want to avoid going to any kind of mechanic because this truck used to belong to my grandpa that died in 2000. This restoration is kinda a gift for him as well as myself, the thought of the old girl being back on the road makes me happy. any advice would help guys. Thanks in advance.
Thanks guys that did it... It was stuck. New problem arose, I replaced the starter and solenoid. All the lights and stuff work but when I turn the key I hear just a grinding sound from the solenoid. She isn't even trying to turn over. Might just be me but the starter doesn't seem to be getting any power what so ever. Any ideas?
Did you connect everything well? maybe a ground is loose. But there are other possible possibilities, including fuel issues, you will need to have the fuel pressure checked, if the pressure is the same as in my model, it should be around 39psi. The grinding sound could be the starter, not the solenoid, check that the starter is properly aligned or it won't be able to turn the engine.
That is on my agenda for tomorrow. I tried to install exactly how it was when I took the old one off. And the sound is definitely coming from the solenoid I'm sure. I read a post about fuse links could that be a problem?
And the throttle was locked up I just oiled it went to tugging lol
On a truck that old, might be a good idea to replace the solenoid first off. They are cheap like $15 and only takes about 5 minutes to change. That may not be the issue however. Did it just start making this noise. Is it a clicking sound or a grinding sound? Problem areas on these old trucks are the battery cables and terminals. If you have lights on then it could be the battery is a bit low. Just for kicks try jumping it and seeing if it starts. Thats all I can think of off top of my head right now.
