3 mounths ago a replaced my master cylinder, today i noticed the brake pedal was soft. i check the master cylinder and it was dripping fluid from underneath. can i upgrade it to a newer version or am i stuck with the old style? The cheapest one you can get will always be a reman. I have heard that NAPA auto parts has a conversion lists that will show which one will fit, has anyone heard of this. thanks for your help.
What does the "newer style" have that the old one doesn't? There are millions of these master cylinders running around on the roads with no problems. I know it's frustrating, but I would figure out what the problem is and get the original system working. You will open up a can of worms with something else, such as fitting threads not being the same, and the bore size not being the same. Plus, there is no real advantage to any other master cylinder that is going to be close to fitting up. Even the hydroboost system on the super duties still use the same master cylinder.
Plus one on not doing a retrofit. If the master you installed is 3 months old even if re-man most likley it is under warrenty. Take it back to the place you got it for an exchange. Then if the new one leaks in a short time get your money back and go buy one some place else. Just my 2 cents. There is an advantage to always using the same parts house everytime. The guys there get to know you and are more willing to help in situaations like this. I have been in this situation before 2 remans and 2 leakers. The parts house stood behind them and the third one supplied was a brand new unit and their expense. Be kind and reasonable with your parts guys and they will respond in a similar fashion. (most times).
