Shaking...Need Inputs...

The Problem:
1990 Ford F150 4WD Single-cab Long-bed
My rig shakes anywhere from 35-80mph progressivly getting worse with high speed, but sometimes it's really bad at lower speeds too, and increases in shake intensity when going around a corner on the highway.

The Question:
I've replaced the U-Joints just recently and it helped a little, and I'm going to get the tires balanced this week, but if the tires don't clear it up,
~~What Else Could Possibly Cause This~~

Does it feel perhaps as if the tires, front or otherwise, are bouncing briefly up off the road?
I had that symptom on my Fairmont, back when it was about the same age as your truck.
Shocks!! Quickly too, before the lack of their assistance wears out something more expensive.

How are the u-joints in the front drive shafts? Are you sure it's not stuck in 4WD or maybe a lockout not disengagig?

Other problems could be:
Mud stuck in behind wheels.
Tires out of balance or else a knot.
U joints.
Loose lug nuts.
Might also want to check all your steering linkage.

You may also want the check the ball joints by raising the vehicle onto jack-stands and then shake the wheel top and bottom. If it moves, you may need new ones.

It's not that bad, it's more of a wobble. Thanks though.

I'm not sure about the front U-joints, they seem fine when I'm in four-wheel, I just replaced the rear drive-shaft U-joints though, so they're good, it needed it so possibly the front ones need it too.

The truck barely sees mud yet until I get it running good, so probably not mud.

Tires=They are out of balance, the bimbo that sold me the truck tried to De-stud a set of winter tires and there are random studs left in some spots on them, I believe that's likely the cause, I'm getting winter tires put on today and balanced, so hopefully that clears it up.

Lug nuts=I looked, that's also likely a factor, one rear tire has a sheered lug-bolt, the front tire has a missing lug nut too... So I'll have to see if the tire service company can replace those for me.

Thanks for the input, I know a lot about these trucks for an 18 year old working on his first truck, but I can't think of everything. You guys rock.

What would be a pretty normal wear out mileage on ball joints on these? Take into consideration this truck has never been rallied, it's always been a commuter truck and on rare occasions was used to haul a four-wheeler trailer.

It has approx. 168,000 miles.

They could be gone. I just had to do a tie rod end at 115K. It was causing a shake in my front end, also an occasional clunk noise. You can test them simalir but turn the wheel side to side with it jacked up.

Thanks Bank, I'm gonna have to check them out. It feels like it could be specifically a front end issue...

Well like you said, "You know the tires are bad." As soon as that is sorted out the rest is always simple, compounded with rust. Good luck bud and update us even if it was just the tires.

Well, I went to get my winters put on and one had a hole in the sidewall, so they put the summers back on and balanced them for free, the shaking has gone down, and I got a lug nut for my front right tire, but my back rear tire I need to pound out a broken lug bolt and replace it. Then that should hopefully clear it up. If not, Ball joints are next on my list, the steering system should all be inspected for sure.

The missing rear lug would not affect this. You would be lucky to feel that at all. Did you ask them to check the front end when they had it up? Most tire guys can tell you if you got a ball joint or bad linkage points.

I belive the Ball joints are the issue here. I've talked to several guys I know and a few guys at O'Rielly's and the shaking increases when more pressure is on the front end, I will jack it up when I get the chance to, but It is likely what's causing it. Thanks for the help. Now, anyone have any tips on replacing the ball joints?
