Let me start by saying despite the fact that I'm a trained diesel tech, I've only owned gas burning vehicles my whole life. I've never really had much of a reason to own a diesel aside from the fact that they're totally b'dass and the occasional trailer I may pull once in a great while.
But, I happened across this ad on craigslist and I'm not gonna lie, it's got my temperature rising! I love the black and I'm sure she would shine up pretty nice. Every long box extended cab I've ever driven rode like a dream and I love 5 speeds because I think they're fun to drive. I know the mileage for this truck isn't that high at all and I figure if a guy could get the seller to come down from the asking price a little bit, it seems like a pretty legit deal.
Or am I wrong? I know a few things about the 7.3's but I'm certainly no expert. What are some common things I should keep an eye out for? Are there any things that would be a deal-breaker for someone who would want to buy it?
I was also poking around the sticky thread about the tuners and chips...has anyone had any really common problems with these motors tuning them back and forth for performance and economy?
here is the link to the ad, any and all thoughts and opinions are much appreciated in advance. Thanks guys!
The price tag is actually $5600 + the time at the shop, i think it's way too expensive... and it seems to have a lot of rust in the undercarriage (if that's looking that way, how are the body panels?).
well, the tranny situation doesn't bother me, that's something I could fix on my own. My father has a shop for me to work on it in and I've got the tooling. So, therefore I was thinking I could talk the PO down that 600 bucks. I was also thinking of talking him down because of the shape of the body, if the bed is beat up like the ad says and if the undercarriage is rusted more than whats normal for this area. I've also got no idea what shape the interior is in...The truck is about 100 miles away from me and I haven't had the chance to look at it yet. However, I'm thinking if I can get the guy to come down to 3,500 or 4k, does that seem like a fair offer? I know Dodge's with the 12v Cummins bring about this much with twice as many miles, but that's not really apples to apples, IMHO...
The price doesn't sound bad to me, course you always want to dicker with the seller. Looked on nada for my area and they list retail at 8K. Rust isnt an issue here, don't know about out there. As long as the front end swap was done right you should be fine, especially since your a diesel tech.
