i have a 2005 f250 6.0. just bought it 6 days ago. I was driving down the interstate and it showed 3/4 hot on the guage. the truck went into fail safe mode, down to 45 mph. found out the water tank cracked and the water went low. i replaced the tank yesterday with a new one and drove the truck all day aprox.200 miles with no problems. went to work this morning and the truck was blowing blueish white smoke bad. i stopped and it smelled like fuel not coolant. drove on to work and the smoking stopped about 8 miles down the road. got off work and the truck smoked all the way home. seems to smoke the most when you let off the gas to slow down in a curve, when gas peddal is pushed back down the truck smokes. i rechecked the coolant tank after the truck cooled off and the level is fine. i started it and let it edle, after about 3 minutes it started smokeing. seems like the truck is despencing to much fuel. during all this the truck runs and idles fine with no codeing. can any one help.
coolant was clean. the thing that throughs me is i drove it all day yesterday and it never smoked. How hard is it to change out the egr cooler and is there a way to know for sure its bad or cracked.
ill will try that. do i need to replace the oil cooler as well? where is the egr cooler located? do you know if it is easy to change? i checked the oil and there is no water in it. just talked to another guy and said my white smoke is no doubt coolant. thanks for the info, you helped me out a lot.
Hey tyler, thanks. Im going to get parts tomarrow and this weekend shes getting torn apart. Do you recamend stock parts? what about the egr delete, is that good or bad?
There are a few other parts you'll want to upgrade. I'll see if I can find an old thread with all of the part numbers for you.
As far as the EGR delete, that's almost a religious discussion around here. EGR delete makes your truck non-compliant with the federal gov't emissions standards. There's pros and cons either way. For what it's worth, I left me EGR cooler in and have no concerns about selling the truck later in any state.
Highly recommend taking your intake to a shop where they can drop it in a heat tank and thoroughly clean it. There will be nasty build-up inside and the cleaning helps your motor breathe better. You can do it yourself, but it is nasty and takes some serious determination. My MPG's jumped up a little after doing mine when replacing my oil cooler.
You will need the upgraded STC fittings. That is a high fail unit on the high pressure oil system for your 05.
Thanks guys, I will be honest, I have been a dodge man my whole life. My buddy had this truck, bought it new. It has the regency badlander package from the dealer. I have liked this truck sence he bought it. Its probly one of the best looking trucks ive ever laied eyes on. A nasty devorce was the reason for him having to sell it. To help him out I bought it for half of what it booked for. Im a little over a week into this truck and right now ford is a bad tast in my mouth. I hope this isnt a foresight of things to come. Its hard to believe a truck this good looking has this many problems. Thanks again for all the help. I will post how this turns out.
If the whitish exhaust smells like fuel, then you have a problem other than bad EGR and oil coolers.
Best advice is spend the $$'s on a scangauge and check for codes. Fuel smell in the exhaust and whitish smoke can be from a failing FICM, bad injector(s), etc.
truck is bone stock motor wise. someone also said posiblely the turbo could have bad seals. Im going to take her to the dealership and have them tell me what is wrong, that way im not buying parts i dont need. then fix it myself. All the symtoms and what lead up to this point, i think the egr cooler is leaking.
The EGR cooler may be leaking (and if so, the oil cooler is probably plugged), a scangauge checking the EOT and ECT would reveal this.
After driving, park on a downslope and pull the EGR valve. If the cooler is leaking, you will see coolant below where the EGR valve was - in the intake.
For sure a leaking EGR cooler is not causing the fuel smell in the exhaust.
A bad turbo might also be an issue, but turbo repair replacement is expensive and you do not want to be guessing on it. Codes will help tremendously. If you think a turbo seal is gone, you can pull/loosen the downpipe and look for oil.
Lots of folks here can help you through these steps if you want to do them yourself.
