I found a leak in the flexible hose from the gas fill to the gas tank. Gas drips out on fill up! Vehicle is a 1993 e-150 van with 5.0 this is a pressurizied fuel system ? Motor isn,t running right could the leak be the problem ? one mechanic told me that the leak will not affect the vehicles performance ? To me it seems like a vacum leak any feedback would be appreciated.
Yep, I'd bet it's your filler hose if you think it is.
On my 1993 my fuel tank had a rusted pinhole or two in it, so in changing my tank out for a new one I got to see what a 1993's filler hose looked like. It was really corroded, cracked and broken down. Sadly I was on a tight schedule, so I had to put it back in.
I hear the hose is expensive. But when you do it, there's a second interior hose you should expect to see, and you might want to change it, too.
There will be no vacuum leak.
It will run fine until it gets near an open heat source, but if your hose is that corroded, it may be dropping pieces of itself into the fuel - which will work their way into the tank.
the gas won't be pressurized in the fuel tank. sometimes a little pressure may build up from temperature, but not enough to force fuel out of the tank. if the problem is your flex hose at the filler, it's a relatively easy fix. any parts store will have the hose and they are ussually held in place with hose clamps. and i doubt that a leaking flex hose will affect engine performance, unless it has let water leak in. but that is usually caused by a bad gas cap, not a hose. also, i have a little fuel dripping whenever i gas up, but it is because a little gas splashes back due to the curve of the flex hose. i just don't fill at full blast and this prevents and splash back, try that to see if that's the case.
