ok if you were to choose a motor for your resto 4x4 F250 dana 60s front and rear what choice Fe 460 400, my delima. bang for the buck any suggestions. Thanks in advance
390 hands down........followed closely by the 360 and the 400 i own 3 390's 2 360's a 292 and a 351 so i may be a little biased but the 390 has alot of power and torqe stock out of the box with alot of room for improvement
Bang for the buck? Definitely the 460... Slap on Edelbrock heads, manifold, a 750 double-pumper, headers, and mild cam you'll be boss.
Trucks! on Spike TV built a 460 not too long ago. Go to their site and review the build. Compare that with a 390 build and there is more potential with the 460.... IMO.
I drive a '73 with a 390, a '79 with a 351M, and until recently a bronco with a FI 300. I like the 300. I've only had a few trucks with inline 6s: 58 chevy with a 235, 73 ford with a 240, and 85 and 91 fords with 300s. But I've had a buttload of trucks with V8s and I pretty much prefer inline 6s to V8s. That said, the 390 definitely does have cojones, and it's fun to drive. But if I drove it everyday I'd drive myself straight to the poorhouse. Gas isn't a dollar a gallon anymore. My motor of choice for a project dentside would be a hopped up 300.
Best bang for the buck is a 460 end of story. Also theres nothing like the sound of a 460 with good exhaust and a mild cam. "CLICKY"

If your primary criteria is purely "bang for the buck" it's a no brainer, hands down go with the 460, gobs of cheap easy horsepower and torque are right at your fingertips, and we're all familiar with the tired but true cliche "there's no replacement for displacement", but having said all that i'd still go with a FE if it were me, preferably a 445FE stroker from Survival Motorsports.

You make a very good argument for the i6 300, it's a nice marriage/compromise between mild performance and fuel economy (when outfitted with the right 'go-fast' parts).
Does the 460 really offer more "bang for the buck" than the 400?
A quick search through summit (not the best place but good for this comparison) shows that most parts for each engine are very close in cost. This all changes if you want to build a 500ci or bigger monster but for the most part well all live in the realm of a RV oriented rebuilds for our motors. I will agree that and equally built 460 will make more peek hp but how often do you drive with your foot to the floor. With the longer stroke of the 400 it is entirely likely that it would make more torque in the 2000ish range and use less gas doing it… not that any of this topic has to do with mileage.
Now all that said I own a supercab with a 400 and one with a 460, the 460 is a power house and I love it and the 400 is stock and probably down a few cylinders so it sucks a lot. Just trying to add some fuel to this fire.
Some day my bronco will get a stroked clevor but that’s just cause it’s half way there with the 351w… oops did I just bring in another option???

HP per dollar spent? 460 wins. The 351M400 ain't called "The Mutt" for nothing. It was a few years ago but it was either CarCraft or HotRod built up a 400 and it made decent HP. But they ended up using pistons from another brand just to generate the numbers. A build to generate the same numbers with a 460 can use off the shelf parts on a stock shortblock.

Exactly. If mileage were the goal, we'd be talkin about 240/300 engines, overdrive trannies, and a final drive ratio in the neighborhood of 2.50. Where's the fun in that? We want bang for the buck... not a water pistol match at a pissin' contest!
How often do I drive with my foot to the floor? Not that often but it's nice to know my right foot will travel the same distance as yours while yer admiring my tail lights.
Are we having fun yet?
I planned to build and install a 460 in my 70 bumpside until I discovered that it only had 70K original miles... it's just a baby!
