Transmission Question

Hi All<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
I have been searching thru many post about transmissions and have not had much luck trying to find the answer to my question. Possibly someone could help me out. I have two 3 speed transmission that I can install in my 66 F100. I am trying to find out which one would be best to install. <o></o>
<o></o>
First transmission is from a 66 F100 with as 352. Not sure I have all of the numbers correct or not but this is the best I can read from the tag on the transmission.<o></o>
<o></o>
RAB A MF17<o></o>
D5TR 25S4<o></o>
<o></o>
The other transmission is from a 74 F100 with a 360. These number were even more difficult to read. <o></o>
<o></o>
RAT CH2<o></o>
GE 015954<o></o>
<o> </o>
If anyone could help or point me to a possible older tread on this issue I would really appreciate it. <o></o>
<o></o>
<o>Thanks</o>

Well, either should install as the 352 bell housing pattern is the exact same as the 360. As for the better install, I would say whichever is in the best shape. However more info on the type of build you are trying to go for would help.

It's not going to make a huge difference in the way they perform, so I say access which one is in better condition, and go with that one. The top gear is going to be 1 to 1 no matter, unless one is an overdrive. One may perform better at the line, but overall no difference.

Im betting the one from the '66 is an FMX and the one from the '74 is a C6. I would go with the C6 unless originality is what you want. Easier to find parts, and much more durable.

Both transmissions are 3 speed manuals, not A/T's. A/T's have the letter P as the first letter of the ID code prefix.

RAB/RAN: Light Duty Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncro trans / RAT: Medium Duty Ford type 3.03 3 speed manual all syncro trans.

No such thing as an FMX until 1969. Mainly installed in misc Passenger Cars thru 1985. The only Ford trucks that used an FMX were 1973/77 F350's with 300 I-6's.

1965/67 F100/350 352 & 1965/72 F350 300 I-6 used MX Cruise-O-Matic.

Go to a parts store and ask for a trans filter/gasket for an FMX, you'll be PO'd when you find out neither is correct.

The MX filter is larger, the MX pan has a notch in it, so no FMX pan gasket will fit it.

The MX pan gasket (B5SZ-7A191-A) was also used in 1955/57 Thunderbird's with Ford-O-Matic, but the F-O-M filter is not the same as the MX.

RAB-A = C5TZ-7003-J .. Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual Light Duty all Syncromesh Transmission / Original applications: 1965/71 F100/250 240 I-6 129" (1965/67) 131" (1967/71) wheelbases.

RAT-CH1 & CH2 = D3TZ-7003-G .. Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual Medium Duty all Syncromesh Transmission / Original applications: 1973/74 F100 360 116" wheelbase.

The extension housings & output shafts are specific to a short or long wheelbase.
